I stumbled upon this band while searching for new listening worthy groups. With such an impressing line-up (Steinar Johnsen - guitars, Marius Vold - vocals, Hellhammer - drums, Tor Stavenes - bass) I felt like I couldn't resist giving this band a shot. The album was released in September 2019. It is a pure black-death metal example. Cold and catchy guitar riffs, deep basslines, and stunning drum work show that it is possible to make a respectable black metal album.
The first track - 'Ravnsvart' introduces us to the idea of the whole release - catchy, at some points symphonic guitar riffs combined with Tor's deadly bass skills and Hellhammer's top-level drum mastery. I am a huge fan of Hellhammer's attitude towards his drumming - he never relies on Mayhem's high status but always tries his best no matter where he plays. With each band, he proves how many skills he didn't show us yet. Marius Vold's vocals are a wonderful addition to already great-sounding songs. He is expressing the numerous feelings perfectly, as well as he gives us a great insight into the band's world and a story that they wanted to tell us. The album focuses a lot on the old school black metal feeling - which I admire. As I said earlier, the band focused a lot on the story and meaning of the whole album but on the other hand, I can hear that they gave even bigger attention to the musical side of the release. Each track has been recorded with the highest quality, music and vocals blend perfectly together. I would like to write a little bit more detailed opinion on my favorite track - 'Demon Shadow'. I can tell You, that I haven't heard anything like that in ages... Such catchy and evil sounding guitar riffs later turning into thrash-like guitar solo surprised the hell out of me. I thought that this solo doesn't fit into the album whatsoever but then... I realized the meaning of this part. In my opinion, the band wanted to show us a little bit of their diversity in their influences, since later that track turns into an instrumental song (which reminds me a little bit of early Iron Maiden). After the instrumental/orchestral part, we get a continuation of the main riff in the track - the dark, heavy riff which made us fall in love with this song in the first place. From there on the song continues on a regular black metal sound and vocals.
The band is entitled to write black/death metal music and that's what they surely do, but I also think that they tried to show us that black metal can be inspired and even contain heavy/thrash/symphonic parts and still sound great as hell!

Natknęłam się na ten zespół, szukając nowych, godnych słuchania grup. Przy tak imponującym składzie (Steinar Johnsen - gitary, Marius Vold - wokal, Hellhammer - perkusja, Tor Stavenes - bas), wiedziałam, że nie mogę nie przesłuchać tego zespołu.Album został wydany we wrześniu 2019 roku. Jest to idealny przykład black-death metalu. Zimne i chwytliwe gitarowe riffy, głębokie linie basu i oszałamiająca praca perkusji pokazują, że można stworzyć porządny album metalowy.
Pierwszy utwór - „Ravnsvart” wprowadza nas w ideę całego wydania - chwytliwe, w niektórych momentach symfoniczne riffy gitarowe połączone ze śmiertelnie profesjonalnym basem Tora i wysokim poziomem gry na perkusji Hellhammera. Jestem wielką fanką gry i ogólnego nastawienia Hellhammera do muzyki - nigdy nie polega na wysokim statusie Mayhem, a zawsze stara się dać z siebie wszystko, bez względu na to, gdzie gra. Z każdym zespołem udowadnia, ile umiejętności nam jeszcze nie pokazał.Wokal Mariusa Volda to wspaniały dodatek do już perfelcyjnie brzmiących utworów. Doskonale wyraża zawarte w nich uczucia, a także daje nam wgląd w świat zespołu i historię, którą chcieli nam opowiedzieć. Album koncentruje się na oldschoolowym klimacie black metalowym - co podziwiam. Jak powiedziałam wcześniej, zespół bardzo skupił się na historii i znaczeniu całego albumu, ale z drugiej strony da się usłyszeć, że poświęcili jeszcze więcej uwagi, muzycznej stronie wydawnictwa. Każdy utwór jest nagrany z najwyższą jakością, a muzyka i wokal idealnie łączą się ze sobą. Chciałabym napisać nieco bardziej szczegółową opinię na temat mojego ulubionego utworu - „Demon Shadow”. Mogę Wam powiedzieć, że od długiego czasu niczego takiego nie słyszałam ... Tak chwytliwie brzmiące gitarowe riffy, które później przerodziły się w thrashowe solo na gitarze, ekstremalnie mnie zaskoczyły. Na początku uważałam, że to solo nie pasuje do albumu, ale potem ... Zrozumiałam znaczenie tej części utworu. Moim zdaniem zespół chciał pokazać nam trochę różnorodności w swoich charakterach oraz zawrzeć cząstki muzyki pozostałych zespołów w jakich grają. Po dłuższej chwili, utwór zamienia się w instrumentalną piosenkę (która przypomina dawnych Iron Maiden). Po części instrumentalnej / orkiestrowej otrzymujemy kontynuację głównego riffu w tym utworze - mrocznego, ciężkiego riffu, który sprawił, że zakochaliśmy się w tej piosence w pierwszego przesłuchania. Odtąd utwór dalej rozwija się w regularnym black metalowym brzmieniu.
Zespół pisze muzykę black / death metalową ( i z pewnością to właśnie robią) jednak uważam też, że starali się nam pokazać, iż black metal może być inspirowany, a nawet zawierać partie heavy / thrash / symfoniczne i nadal brzmieć wspaniale!
