DAUDEN - 'My soul will be damned forever' (2015) and 'Dodsblikket' (2019)

Norwegian black metal one-man band, led by an extremely talented drummer - Malignant (Mork, Dauden, ex-Ragnarok), has put out two albums and several EPs throughout its career. Dauden started in 2005 as a cover band, and later on, they developed their material. If you have watched Mork's latest online show and Q&A, then you'll know that Malignant is planning to release new material one day... not soon, tho. As you probably noticed, I will be reviewing Dauden's two albums. Why? Well, that's the exact type of music that I like, and I really couldn't choose which album I wanted to review... so there you go... two albums plus a short introduction to the band. Enjoy.
Firstly, I'm reviewing the latest release - 'Dødsblikket' (2019).
When I realized that this album was a drummer's - Malignant, one-man project, I decided that I have to give it a shot. You all know how much I care about drums, and so as a result of that, I thought that an album which was created by a drummer has to sound good - and I wasn't disappointed.
'Dødsblikket' has eight tracks, each with top-level drums, catchy and evil guitar riffs with morbid vocals. Each song provokes different emotions and feelings, each one tells a different story, but on the other hand, the album makes a perfect, coherent whole. I want to highlight the ending of 'La Meg Felle' - it's extremely atmospheric, dark and at some points almost romantic-like. This track shows us how to end a black metal song - by including incredibly harmonious guitar and drums collaboration. Like I said before, the band serves us plenty of black metal riffs. At some points, You can hear old school influences which make the listening experience even better. The fact that Malignant played all instruments and laid all the vocals shows his high dedication for making dark music. Considering his involvement in Ragnarok as well as being a drummer in Mork, You can easily tell that this album had to be such a top-level release.
In my opinion, 'Dødsblikket' is a pivotal release in Dauden's career. That's because Malignant did all the instruments + vocals through which he stated how top-level band Dauden is. Knowing that there will be more from the band, I really can't wait for the coldness and darkness which Malignant will provide us.
Now going back in time to Dauden's 'My soul will be damned forever'.
The first full album was released in 2015 with a completely different lineup - actually, there was a lineup in comparison to 'Dødsblikket'. Malignant collaborated with Berserk on bass, Stürm on guitars, and Drakamer on vocals. The album's style proudly represents second-wave Norwegian black metal, takes us on a journey to blast-beat land. 'My soul will be damned forever' is a great, old-school album, which exactly goes by the rules of black metal. This doesn't mean that the release sucked or whatever - it's just not as original as 'Dødsblikket' is. Each track is a lengthy one, but tempo variations, exquisite drum + guitar work, and morbid vocals make them enjoyable. The sound of this album reminded me of Mayhem and Darkthrone's early releases. This exact old school feeling is way heavier on this album than on 2019's release.
I enjoyed 'My soul will be damned forever' although it's not my favorite - I prefer 'Dødsblikket' a little bit more. If I had to compare these two releases, then I'd say that they are extremely different. I think that the biggest impact on that had the lineup - with all respect to musicians on the first album, 'Dødsblikket' sounds and feels better. I think that when it comes to Malignant's own projects, he sounds better alone, as the only creator of Dauden's content. If you're seeking for something groundbreaking, then I advise you to choose 'Dødsblikket' over 'My soul will be damned forever'. I think that the more recent release will give you fresh black metal tracks which stand out in Dauden's history as well as the underground metal community.
I encourage you to listen to both albums and then choose your favorite... maybe it'll be the first album... who's to say.

Norweski black-metalowy one-man projekt, prowadzony przez niezwykle utalentowanego perkusistę - Malignant'a (Mork, Dauden, ex-Ragnarok), wydał dwa albumy i kilka EP-ek w trakcie swojej kariery. Dauden rozpoczął działalność w 2005 roku jako zespół coverowy, a później zaczęli wydawać swój materiał. Jeśli oglądaliście ostatni live stream Mork oraz Q&A, będziecie wiedzieć, że Malignant planuje wydać nowy materiał... na pewno nie wkrótce. Jak zapewne zauważyliście, zrecenzowałam oba albumy Dauden. Dlaczego? Cóż, to jest dokładnie ten rodzaj muzyki, który lubię i naprawdę nie mogłam wybrać, który album chciałabym opisać ... więc proszę bardzo ... dwa albumy plus krótkie zapoznanie z zespołem.
Na pierwszy ogień recenzuję najnowsze wydanie - „Dødsblikket” (2019).
Kiedy zdałam sobie sprawę, że ten album to dzieło Malignant'a jako jednoosobowy projekt, zdecydowałam, że muszę go przesłuchać. Wszyscy wiecie, jak bardzo zależy mi na odpowiedniej pracy i brzmieniu perkusji, dlatego pomyślałam, że album stworzony przez perkusistę musi brzmieć dobrze - i nie zawiodłam się.
„Dødsblikket” składa się z ośmiu utworów, każdy z perkusją na najwyższym poziomie, chwytliwymi gitarowymi riffami i porządnym, black metalowym wokalem. Każdy z utworów wywołuje u mnie różne emocje i uczucia, każdy opowiada inną historię, ale z drugiej strony album stanowi idealną, spójną całość. Chcę podkreślić zakończenie utworu „La Meg Felle” - jest niezwykle klimatyczne, a w niektórych momentach prawie romantycznie brzmiące. Ten utwór pokazuje nam, jak zakończyć black metalowy utwór - zwyczajnie dołączyć niesamowicie harmonijną współpracę gitary i perkusji. Jak powiedziałam wcześniej, zespół serwuje nam mnóstwo black metalowych riffów. W niektórych momentach słychać wpływy starej szkoły norweskiego black metalu, które sprawiają, że słuchanie tego albumu jest jeszcze lepsze. Fakt, że Malignant grał na wszystkich instrumentach oraz śpiewał , świadczy o jego dużym zaangażowaniu w tworzenie mrocznej, zimnej muzyki. Biorąc pod uwagę jego zaangażowanie w Ragnarok oraz bycie perkusistą w Mork, łatwo można stwierdzić, że album ten musiał być wydany na najwyższym poziomie.
Moim zdaniem „Dødsblikket” to kluczowe wydanie w karierze Dauden. To dlatego, że Malignant wykonał wszystkie instrumenty + wokale, dzięki którym pokazał, że Dauden to zespół najwyższego poziomu. Wiedząc, że nadchodzi kolejne wydanie, naprawdę nie mogę się doczekać chłodu,ciemności i prawdziwego black metalu, które zapewni nam Malignant.
Teraz cofam się w czasie do „My soul will be damned forever".
Pierwszy pełny album został wydany w 2015 roku z zupełnie innym składem - w rzeczywistości tam BYŁ jakikolwiek skład w porównaniu do „Dødsblikket”. Malignant współpracował z Berserk'iem na basie, Stürm'em na gitarach i Drakamer'em na wokalu. Styl albumu z dumą reprezentuje drugą falę norweskiego black metalu, zabiera nas w podróż do krainy blast-beatów. „My soul will be damned forever” to świetny, oldschoolowy album, który dokładnie przestrzega zasad black metalu. Nie oznacza to, że wydanie było słabe lub cokolwiek innego - jednak nie jest tak oryginalne, jak „Dødsblikket”. Każdy utwór jest długi, ale zmiany tempa, wyśmienita praca perkusji i gitary oraz chorobliwy wokal sprawiają, że są przyjemne. Dźwięk tego albumu przypomniał mi wczesne wydania Mayhem i Darkthrone. To właśnie oldschoolowe uczucie jest znacznie cięższe na tym albumie niż na albumie z 2019 roku.
„My sould will be damned” bardzo mi się spodobało, chociaż nie jest to moje ulubione wydanie - trochę bardziej wolę „Dødsblikket”. Gdybym musiała porównać te dwa wydania, powiedziałabym, że są one bardzo różne. Myślę, że największy wpływ miał na to skład - z całym szacunkiem dla muzyków z pierwszego albumu, „Dødsblikket” brzmi lepiej. Myślę, że jeśli chodzi o własne projekty Malignanta, lepiej brzmi samotnie, jako jedyny twórca materiału Dauden. Jeśli szukasz czegoś przełomowego, radzę wybrać „Dødsblikket” zamiast „My soul will be damned forever”.
