WITCHBONES - 'Goety' LP

Another review of an amazing, talented, and hardworking underground metal band, this time from Portland. WITCHBONES is a one-man project done by Vardloker. He performed all the instruments on the album as well as did the vocals. The album is completed by an outstanding artwork by C.Animvs Studio. Thanks again to Morbid Chapel Records for hooking me up with so many cool CDs for reviews.

On 'Goety' you'll find the band's own tracks and one BURZUM cover, so ten in total. When I first got a look at the tracklist, I was kind of startled by seeing the word 'cover'. Well, the thing is that I haven't been listening to many covers lately, and I have no experience in reviewing nor understanding them, so the 10th track was kind of a challenge to me at first. Well, challenge accepted.

The first track definitely gives an extremely strong entrance which contains a catchy guitar riff, tasty usage of drum cymbals as well as drum blasts, finished off with something like wolves' cries, kinda grind like vocals.

I liked the way the tracks were constructed - louder guitar riffs that aren't too distorted, tasteful drums with not too many blast beats. I couldn't hear much bass tho, but I wouldn't say that this was a huge problem.

The only thing which didn't fit in for me at some points was the vocals. I obviously liked them, and I feel like they were just perfect for some of the tracks, but for other ones, I think they were too deep, and too grind like. I'd rather prefer if they weren't like that all the time and if Vardlocker would vary them a bit.

Coming back to the instrumental part of the release. I'm a huge fan of the guitar parts on this album. I could could hear catchy doom metal riffs that weren't too distorted, contrary to that, they were done with top-level guitar skills.

Like I said before, the bass wasn't much hearable, but some points you could tell it out and hear that it was actually good. Now the drums - obviously, I'm the biggest fan of this instrument, so I always focus on it first. There are no major issues with the performance, although they could be louder because at some points they kind of sound like they're stuck in a box and can't get out. That's the last issue for me, but none of them interrupted me in enjoying the album.

I can surely say that my most favorite track was 'Goddes of Black Magick' - a song which generates strong emotions, and contains beautiful cooperation of all instruments, finished off with deep vocals. After the mentioned track we get a song performed on classical guitar - this deep, romantic track elevated the album very high. I think that classical guitar was exactly something that should be on the release. Also, the mood it gives you, and it's sound fit perfectly with a beautiful title 'There is thunder in our hearts' - and that is exactly what the song represents for me. It sounds like doubts, sadness, happiness, and many unspoken thoughts. 'Ghosts of Fallen Woods' also is focused on a similar kind of musical style but I'd say that it's more of an interlude.

Last but not least the BURZUM cover - 'Erblicket die töchter des firmaments'.

I was shocked by how amazing it turned out to be. The song was covered beautifully with the highest care for details. I think that this track really determined the soul of the album. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not a fan of covers but this one really slayed.

Overall, I wouldn't say that this album swept me off my feet, but surely is caused some strong emotions and provided a few very decent tracks and a top-level BURZUM cover.

Kolejna recenzja niesamowitego i utalentowanego undergroundowego zespołu metalowego, tym razem z Portland. WITCHBONES to jednoosobowy projekt stworzony przez Vardloker'a. Wykonał on wszystkie instrumenty na płycie, a także wokal. Album uzupełnia znakomita grafika autorstwa C.Animvs Studio. Jeszcze raz dziękuję Morbid Chapel Records za zapewnienie mi tylu fajnych płyt CD do recenzji.

Na „Goety” znajdziesz materiał zespołu i jeden cover BURZUM, czyli w sumie dziesięć ciekawych utworów. Kiedy po raz pierwszy spojrzałam na listę utworów, byłam nieco zaskoczona słowem „cover”. Cóż, chodzi o to, że ostatnio nie słuchałam wielu coverów i nie mam doświadczenia w ich recenzowaniu ani rozumieniu, więc na samym początku dziesiąty utwór był dla mnie wyzwaniem. Cóż, wyzwanie przyjęte.

Pierwszy utwór zdecydowanie daje niezwykle mocne wejście, które zawiera wpadające w ucho gitarowe riffy, smaczne wykorzystanie talerzy i blastów perkusji, zakończone czymś w rodzaju okrzyków wilków, trochę grindowymi wokalami.

Podobał mi się sposób, w jaki zostały skonstruowane utwory - głośniejsze gitarowe riffy, które nie są zbyt zniekształcone, wysmakowana perkusja z niezbyt dużą ilością blastów. Nie słyszałam dużo basu, ale nie powiedziałabym, że to ogromny problem.

Jedyną rzeczą, która w niektórych momentach mi nie pasowała, był wokal. Oczywiście były anprawdę dobre i wiem, że były po prostu idealne do niektórych utworów, ale w przypadku innych uważam, że były zbyt głębokie i zbyt ciche. Wolałqbym raczej, gdyby nie były takie przez cały czas i gdyby Vardlocker trochę je zmienił.

Wracając do instrumentalnej części wydania. Jestem wielką fanką partii gitarowych na tym albumie. Usłyszałam wpadające w ucho riffy doom metalowe, które nie były zbyt przesterowane, w przeciwieństwie do tego, były one wykonane na najwyższym poziomie.

Jak powiedziałem wcześniej, bas nie był zbytnio słyszalny, ale w niektórych przypadkach można było odróżnić i usłyszeć, że był naprawdę dobry.

Teraz perkusja - oczywiście uwielbiam ten instrument, więc zawsze najpierw się na nim skupiam. Nie ma większych problemów z grą, chociaż perkusja mogła być głośniejsza, ponieważ w niektórych miejscach brzmiała tak, jakby utknęła w pudełku i nie mogą się wydostać. To dla mnie ostatni, mały problem, ale żaden z nich nie przeszkodził mi w cieszeniu się albumem.

Z całą pewnością mogę powiedzieć, że moim ulubionym kawałkiem był „Goddes of Black Magick” - utwór, który budzi silne emocje i zawiera piękną współpracę wszystkich instrumentów, zakończoną głębokim wokalem. Po wspomnianym utworze otrzymujemy pierwszy wykonany na gitarze klasycznej - ten głęboki, romantyczny utwór podniósł album bardzo wysoko. Myślę, że gitara klasyczna była dokładnie tym, co powinno znaleźć się na wydawnictwie. Poza tym nastrój, jaki ci daje ta piosenka, i jej brzmienie idealnie pasują do pięknego tytułu „There is thunder in our hearts” - i właśnie to reprezentuje dla mnie ta piosenka. Brzmi jak wątpliwości, smutek, szczęście i wiele niewypowiedzianych myśli. „Ghosts of Fallen Woods” również skupia się na podobnym stylu muzycznym, ale powiedziałabym, że jest to bardziej przerywnik niż utwór.

Na koniec cover BURZUM - „Erblicket die töchter des firmaments”.

Byłam zszokowana tym, jak niesamowity okazał się być. Piosenka została pięknie wykonana z najwyższą dbałością o szczegóły. Myślę, że ten utwór naprawdę zdeterminował duszę albumu. Jak wspomniałam wcześniej, nie jestem fanką coverów, ale ten naprawdę skradł moje serce.

Ogólnie rzecz biorąc, nie powiedziałabym, że ten album zmiótł mnie z nóg, ale z pewnością wzbudził silne emocje i dostarczył kilku bardzo przyzwoitych utworów i cover BURZUM na najwyższym poziomie.
