Metal Church was founded in 1980 in Aberdeen, California. In 1981 Metal Church released the first demo "Red Skies" and since then many members have been through the band, the lineup was not constant and even Lars Ulrich himself played with the guys on several rehearsals. As we know, John Marshall, who was the guitarist in the band, also worked as a guitar tech of Kirk Hammett from Metallica. Further demos led to the creation and release of the first self-titled album "Metal Church" (1984).
The album begins with the song "Beyond the Black", which sounds quite futuristic for those times, an introduction that sounds like a Martian conversation from the movie "Mars Attacks!". The song "Metal Church" is definitely the weakest link in the whole album. It did not exert any emotions on me, it can be said that it went unnoticed among the rest of the songs, which are definitely characterized by strong sound. This album consists of: fast guitar playing, distinctive drums, clear bass lines. The instruments are really refined in every degree, but I can't say it about the vocals ... During some songs I got the impression that the vocalist just didn't want to sing and at other times it seemed as if individual songs were not finished. In my opinion "Gods of Wrath" stands out very much - what can you say here ... I just love this piece ... it's atmospheric and at the same time spicy - that is, everything is as it should be. The song alludes to the myth of Prometheus - one of my favorite myths, so listening to it was pure pleasure. This song, as well as several others, is very energizing thanks to solid guitar parts. I think the album can be divided into two parts - the latter is clearly weaker, boring and underdeveloped.
Despite the fact that the last three songs are worse than the others, it does not change the fact that the album is at a very high level and proudly represents heavy / power / thrash metal. I think this album should be known to all metal fans - it is a kind of genre determinant.

Płytę rozpoczyna utwór "Beyond the Black" dość futurystycznie brzmiącym, jak na tamte czasy, wstępem, który brzmi jak rozmowa marsjan z filmu "Mars Attacks!". Utwór "Metal Church" jest zdecydowanie najsłabszym ogniwem całej płyty. Nie wywarł na mnie żadnych emocji, można powiedzieć, że przeszedł niezauważony pośród reszty kawałków, które zdecydowanie odznaczają się mocnym brzmieniem. Na ten album składają się: szybka gra na gitarze, wyróżniająca się perkusja, wyraźne linie basu. Instrumenty są naprawdę dopracowane w każdym stopniu, jednak nie mogę powiedzieć tego o wokalu... Podczas niektórych utworów odniosłam wrażenie jakby wokaliście po prostu nie chiało się śpiewać a w innych momentach wydawało mi się jakby poszczególne utwory nie zostały dokończone. Moim zdaniem bardzo wyróżnia się "Gods of Wrath" - co tu można powiedzieć... po prostu kocham ten kawałek... jest klimatyczny a zarazem ostry - czyli wszystko jest tak jak być powinno. Utwór nawiązuje do mitu o Prometeuszu - jeden z moich ulubionych mitów, więc słuchanie go było czystą przyjemnością. Utwór ten, jak i kilka innych, jest bardzo energetyzujący dzięki solidnym partiom gitarowym. Uważam, że album można podzielić na dwie części - ta druga jest wyrażnie słabsza, nudna i niedopracowana.
Pomimo tego, że trzy ostatnie utwory są gorsze niż pozostałe to nie zmienia to faktu, że płyta jest na bardzo wysokim poziomie i godnie reprezentuje heavy/power/thrash metal. Uważam, że ten album powinien znać każdy fan metalu - jest on pewnego rodzaju wyznacznikiem gatunku.
