Although the envelope around the band Manowar is very popular, it is said that it was a band that was too pathetic, artificial in their lyrics and style of playing (most of the songs only touch the subject of metal, the lifestyle of a metal fan, etc.), which is why a lot of Heavy Metal listeners, I recognize this musical formation is too kitschy, but I do not share this opinion and do not agree with it. The fact that the band is too pathetic and kitschy could be written about their musical period these days. Here I actually see an excess of form over content, and after the last albums, the band's fatigue with repetitive material for years. However, all their albums, from their debut "Battle Hymns" in 1982 to the album "Kings of metal", I consider being an excellent and powerful dose of very good Traditional Heavy / Power metal. It was probably influenced by the fact that from their debut until the album "Kings Of Metal", they had the legendary guitarist and keyboardist in their ranks - Ross "the boss". Who often showed his great composing talent and gift for writing musical texts when composing works with Manowar. It was during this period of the band's activity, i.e. from 1982 to 1988, that a great music album of this band was created, which I will mention and review today - I invite you to mention the album Manowar - "Sign of The Hammer"!
The fact is that the texts of the Manowar are mostly repetitive and concern only one - heavy metal lifestyle (even a website that mocks the band was created - the so-called text generator for heavy metal songs in the Manowar style). it is diverse, which is best proven by the example of the last composition on this album, i.e. "Guyana" (Cult Of The Damned), about which I will write more later. But let's start from the beginning. The starter CD greets us with a song called "All Men Play on 10" it is a good decent heavy metal opener with interesting riffs and a typical heavy metal rhythm and barb. I fit in with the opening of this excellent album. The next track is "Animals" and it is absolutely in my top 4 compositions from this album. We have an atmosphere of riffs and melodies just like speed metal mixed with heavy metal and excellent choirs where I just want to sing with the vocalist Erik Adams and the band, especially the phrase - I'm an animal! The whole album in general, which I like very much, that in some places the backing vocals and the sound of this album remind me of pathos and epicness like in the piece from Bathory - "One Rode To Asa Bay". After great animals, the album still does not slow down, we have another great track, namely the track - "Thor" (The Powerhead), excellent riffs, speed of the song as well as a vocal melody and lyrics that catch my ear very quickly and I will not fly out for a long time head.
The composition, of course, referring to Norse mythology - "Thor the mighty, Thor the brave Crush the infidels in your way, By our hammer let none be saved". The next composition on this album is not a slowdown in the intro compared to the 3 previous compositions on this release, but only for a moment, because in the next part the song explodes with acceleration and more energy, talking about the song "Mountains", beautiful atmospheric Power Ballad, with a beautiful and very valuable text about growing up and to fight for the quality of your life and your dreams, such as reaching mountains and peaks, a very beautiful metaphor of life shown by conquering hills - "Like a man is a mountainside Greatness waits for those who try, None can teach you it's all inside Just climb". The fifth number of this album is the title composition "Sign Of The Hammer". Another my favorite track from this album, because we have here again, especially at the beginning, the atmosphere of guitar riffs and melodies as in speed / heavy metal and a great catchy melodic refrain. The sixth track is "the Oath" it is a good classic heavy metal piece, but I missed something in this track, I don't know what, but I think the atmosphere. This track does not stand out from the rest, but somehow it just didn't take me away. Track number seven 'thunderpick' is actually just a filler for this album, an instrumental display of Joey DeMaio's bass guitar skills. For fans of bass guitar and for bass players it can be a nice touch and flavor of this album. Eight tracks that are the last composition, closing this album is a real hidden gem of this disc - "Guyana" (Cult Of The Damned), the song tells about the established sect called The Temple of the People in the mid-1970s. In Jonestown (Osada w Gjujana), Jim Jones, the leader of this sect, a massive 909 inhabitants of this village committed mass suicide. The great bass input in this piece (probably the best of the whole compositions on this album) gives the perfect dark atmosphere to this piece, it is emphasized at the end and in the high chorus in the vocal scale Eric Adams' scream. A truly majestic, epic, and wonderful Heavy metal composition.
To sum up "Sign Of The Hammer" from Manowar, it's a really great traditional Heavy / Power metal album. The biggest advantage of this album is its sound, typical of metal albums, especially from the 80s and 90s, and the amazing clattering sound of the bass guitar for me. Of course, there will be critics of this sound, but everyone has different tastes. For me, (thanks to this sound), the album is really classic heavy metal, a very good release. I recommend listening to this album!

Chociaż otoczka wokół zespołu Manowar jest bardzo popularna jakoby był to zespół aż za bardzo patetyczny, sztuczny w swoich tekstach i stylu grania (W większości tematyka ich utworów porusza opowieści o stylu życia metalowca itp.), przez co często dużo słuchaczy Heavy metalu, uznaję te formację muzyczną wręcz za kiczowatą, to ja jednak nie podzielam tej opinii i nie zgadzam się z tym. To, że zespół jest zbyt patetyczny i kiczowaty, można by było tak napisać o ich okresie muzycznym w dzisiejszych czasach. Tutaj rzeczywiście widzę przerost formy nad treścią no i po ostatnich albumach, zmęczenie zespołu powtarzalnym materiałem przez lata. Jednak wszystkie ich albumy począwszy od ich debiutu "Battle Hymns" z 1982 roku, aż do albumu "Kings of metal" (1988) uważam za znakomitą i potężna dawkę bardzo dobrego tradycyjnego Heavy/Power metalu. Na to wszystko pewnie miało wpływ, że właśnie od ich debiutu, aż do plyty "Kings Of metal", w swoich szeregach mieli legendarnego już gitarzystę oraz klawiszowca – Ross "the bossa", który niejednokrotnie podczas tworzenia utworów z Manowar pokazywał swój wielki talent kompozytorski, oraz dar do pisania tekstów muzycznych. Właśnie w tym okresie działalności zespołu czyli od 1982 roku do 1988 powstała wspaniała płyta muzyczna tego zespołu, którą dziś wspomnę i zrecenzuję – zapraszam na wspomnienie płyty manowar – "Sign Of The Hammer"!
Fakt faktem, że teksty Manowar w większości są powtarzalne i dotyczą tylko jednego – heavy metalowego stylu życia (powstała nawet prześmiewająca zespół strona internetowa – tak zwany generator tekstów do utworów heavy metalowych w stylu właśnie Manowar) to jednak na płycie "Sign Of The Hammer" tematyka tekstów jest różnorodna, czego dowodzi najlepiej przykład ostatniej kompozycji na tej płycie, czyli "Guyana" (Cult Of The Damned), o którym to numerze napiszę później więcej. Zacznijmy jednak od początku. Płyta na start wita nas utworem o nazwie” All Men Play on 10” jest to dobry porządny heavy metalowy otwieracz z ciekawymi riffami oraz typowym heavy metalowym rytmem i zadziorem. Pasuję na otwarcie tego znakomitego albumu. Kolejny numer to utwór „Animals” i jest absolutnie w mojej top 4 kompozycji z tej płyty. Mamy tutaj klimat riffów jak i melodii wręcz jak ze speed metalu wymieszanego właśnie z heavy metalem i doskonałe chórki gdzie po prostu aż chcę się śpiewać wraz z wokalistą Erikiem Adamsem i resztą zespołu, zwłaszcza fraze – "I’m an Animal"! Całość ogólnie tej płyty co mi się bardzo podoba, że miejscami chórki oraz brzmienie tej płyty, kojarzy mi się z patosem i epickością jak w kawałku od Bathory – "One Rode To Asa Bay". Po świetny "Animals", album ciągle nie zwalnia ze swojego tempa, mamy kolejny świetny kawałek, a mianowicie utwór – "Thor"(The Powerhead) znakomite riffy, szybkość utworu a także melodia wokalu i tekst który wpada w ucho i na bardzo długo nie wylatuję z głowy. Kompozycja oczywiście nawiązująca do mitologii nordyckiej – "Thor the mighty, Thor the brave Crush the infidels in your way, By our hammer let none be saved". Kolejna kompozycja na tym krążku, to już nie co zwolnienie w intrze w porównaniu do 3 poprzednich kompozycji na tym wydawnictwie, ale tylko na chwilę, gdyż w dalszej części utwór wybucha przyśpieszeniem i więszką energią, mowa o kawałku “Mountains” piękna klimatyczna Power Ballada, z pięknym i bardzo wartościowym tekstem mówiącym o dorastaniu i żeby zawalczyć o jakość swojego życia i swoje marzenia, jak właśnie o zdobycie gór i szczytów, bardzo piękna metafora życia ukazana poprzez zdobywanie wzgórz – „Like a man is a mountainside Greatness waits foor those who try, None can teach you it’s all inside Just climb". Piątym numerem tej płyty jest kompozycja tytułowa czyli „Sign Of The Hammer” kolejny mój ulubiony numer z tej płyty, ponieważ mamy tutaj znowu zwłaszcza na początku utworu klimat gitarowych riffów i melodii jak w speed/heavy metalu no i świetny chwytliwy melodyczny refren. Szósta kompozycja to utwór „The Oath” jest to dobry klasyczny heavy metalowy kawałek, ale jednak trochę mi czegoś tu zabrakło w tym numerze, w sumie sam nie wiem czego, ale chyba klimatu. Nie oddstaje od reszty ten kawałek, ale jakoś mnie po prostu nie porwał. Siódmy utwór "Thunderpick" to w sumie po prostu wypełniacz tej płyty, instrumentalny popis umiejętności na gitarze Basowej Joey’ego DeMaio. Dla sympatyków gitary basowej i dla basistów może to być miły akcent i smaczek tej płyty. Ósmy utwór, czyli ostatnia kompozycja, zamykająca ten album to prawdziwa ukryta perełka tego krążka - „Guyana" (Cult Of the Damned)” utwór opowiada o założonej sekcie o nazwie "Świątynia ludu" w połowie lat 70 XX wieku W Jonestwon (Osadzie w Gjujanie) gdzie z polecenia Jima Jonesa, czyli przywódcy tej sekty masowo 909 mieszkańców tej wioski popełniło zbiorowe samobójstwo. Wspaniałe wejście basu w tym utworze (chyba najlepsze z całych kompozycji na tej płycie) daje doskonały mroczny klimat temu utworowi, podkreśla go jeszcze na koniec oraz w refrenie wysokim w skali głosu krzyk Erica Adamsa. Naprawdę majestatyczna, epicka i wspaniała Heavy metalowa kompozycja.
Podsumowując, "Sign Of The Hammer" od zespołu Manowar, to naprawdę wspaniała tradycyjna Heavy/Power metalowa płyta. Na największy atut tej płyty stawiałbym jej brzmienie, typowe dla albumów metalowych zwłaszcza z lat 80 i 90, oraz to niesamowite jak dla mnie klekoczące brzmienie gitary basowej. Znajdą się oczywiście krytycy takiego brzmienia, ale wiadomo każdy ma różne jak i zarówno swoje gusta muzyczne i upodobania. Dla mnie dzięki takiemu brzmieniu płyta jest naprawdę klasycznym heavy metalowym, bardzo dobrym wydawnictwem. Polecam ją przesłuchać!
