1349 'Massive Cauldron of Chaos' (2014) - Back To The Past
Yet another episode of our small series called 'Back To The Past'. In today's chapter, I will be reviewing an amazing full-length album of a band that needs no introduction - 1349. This band has been one of the first black metal acts I've ever heard, they also introduced me to the more aggressive and brutal side of black metal, as well as magical black metal creativity and musical groove. The band consists of four fine gentlemen - Ravn (vocals), Seidemann (bass guitar), Frost (drums), and Archaon (guitars). Their utter creativity and wild aggression have allowed them to release seven brilliant albums since the beginning of their career. Today has marked six years of 'Massive Cauldron of Chaos', and that exact album goes under my inspection in this review.
Starting with a very strong track 'Cauldron', which already sets a mood that will be present only on the side one of the vinyl - but about that a bit later. Guitar riffs are done by Archaon - perfectly balanced, they are hearable, catchy, and very symphonious-like, but they are, THANKFULLY, not pushed to the front, before all other instruments. They aren't too loud, as in some black metal releases, they complete vocals, drums, and bass, they're not the main point which should grasp your attention. Guitars collaborate perfectly with drums done by the blast-machine-man- Frost. He and Archaon certainly had to work closely together, since you can hear a flawless connection between those two instruments - it's almost as if one of them drags the other on by a hand and then then the other way around, but in the end, they walk together, jointly. These two instruments are wonderfully completed by very deep basslines done by a virtuoso - Seidemann - he surely did and still does a lot of brilliant work as the bassist in 1349. His bass is always hearable, it brings the depth and complements many notes or musical beautifiers which otherwise wouldn't be noticed. Coming to vocals now - Ravn's voice is very unique and unforgettable. On 'MCoC' it's exactly like that, and also it's kinda more faded, mysterious, not so upfront introduced and slammed in your face, as on earlier albums like 'Demonoir' for example. The whole musical aspect is very hard to describe. I have heard many bands and most of them were easy to analyze by each instrument, lyric or note, but 1349's musical ingredients are inseparable. Sure, you can describe each instrument alone, but what will that give you? You won't understand anything about their work then. Musically, 1349 is a band in which everything is connected to everything else, even the smallest details are meaningfully attached to big picture stuff.
Moving into more mood/emotional side of the release. While listening to the vinyl version of the album, I heard a HUGE difference in the music, as well as the mood, showed on the album. Side A was extremely foggy, dusty, almost as if it was covered under multiple layers of old dust as if it was recorded in a cave or a dungeon. The feelings that this image brought me were quite adequate - I also felt as if I was walking through old dusty cellars. I think that this foggy sound worked perfectly with these tracks because they seemed far, maze-like as if you had to understand them to hear them properly. Then we've got Side B of the vinyl - totally losing my mind over the sudden change of mood. Sure, Ravn's vocals stay the same (with one exception, but about that later) - they're quite dusty, a bit flat at the beginning of 'Mengele's' but then they get very deeps, scratchy and evil - that's what I adore about them. Vocals and the rest of the instruments brought this ultimately aggressive, sad, dark, and quite hurtful mood. This side illustrated less of a musical groove, symphony, or coherency but it clearly has shown us what the band is led by - brutality and utter aggression. Ravn's vocals + Frost's drumming skills punch you in the face while Archaon's and Seidemann's riffs provide a strong backup for those earlier mentioned instruments. 'Mengele's', 'Golem', and 'Chained' lead to a perfect ending and the new beginning - 'Godslayer'. This particular track gives you everything you'll need to know about their latest album. Sad, grim, overflowed by pain and disappointment vocals are perfectly explaining to us many matters of our society. Frost's drumming is very aggressive and also sophisticated, then it's completed by coherent bass and guitar riffs, which completed the suffering contained in Ravn's vocals. The understanding of those taboo topics in the 'Godslayer' track hit me hard, pierced through me, and dug deep into my soul - but I'd rather keep all the thoughts to myself, which the track highlighted for me in overthoughtful life. I obviously interpreted this track very personally, but that is ONLY my understanding of it obviously, so each of you is free to see the meaning their own way. Nevertheless, Side A is way more delicate and 'hidden', meanwhile Side B rips your guts out, gives you power, aggression, and shows the ultimate pain, which is mostly contained in the last track.
Overall, this is an almost perfect record. It has all that a professional black metal album should have - mystery, pain, sadness, and pure aggression. It surely brings you a good amount of creatively-arranged music, lots of deep and meaningful topics to consider, and also a hell lot of a good, enjoyable time. As maybe you've noticed earlier, this release means a lot to me on a personal level, but musically as well. It's a hell of a record, completed by a very tasteful artwork, minimalistic layout, and delicate promotion. If you adore black metal as much as I do, then you should listen to this release and pay 1349 the respect they deserve for keeping the black metal scene alive and releasing such good content throughout the years.

Kolejny odcinek naszej małej serii zatytułowanej „Back To The Past”. W dzisiejszym rozdziale dokonam recenzji niesamowitego albumu zespołu, którego nie trzeba przedstawiać - 1349. Ten zespół był jednym z pierwszych black metalowych formacji, jakie kiedykolwiek słyszałam, wprowadził mnie także w bardziej agresywną i brutalną stronę black metalu, oraz magiczną black metalową kreatywność i muzyczny groove. Zespół składa się z czterech świetnych panów - Ravn (wokal), Seidemann (gitara basowa), Frost (perkusja) i Archaon (gitary). Ich niezwykła kreatywność i dzika agresja pozwoliły im wydać siedem genialnych albumów od początku kariery. Dzisiaj minęło sześć lat „Massive Cauldron of Chaos” i dokładnie ten album podlega mojej inspekcji w tej recenzji.
Zaczynamy od bardzo mocnego utworu „Cauldron”, wprowadzajcego w nastrój, który będzie obecny tylko na pierwszej stronie winylu - ale o tym nieco później. Riffy gitarowe wykonuje Archaon - doskonale wyważone, słyszalne, wpadające w ucho i bardzo symfoniczne, ale nie są one, NA SZCZĘŚCIE, wypychane do przodu, przed wszystkimi innymi instrumentami. Nie są zbyt głośne, uzupełniają one wokale, perkusję i bas, nie są głównym punktem, który powinien przyciągnąć twoją uwagę. Gitary doskonale współpracują z bębnami wykonanymi przez człowieka-maszynę do blastbeatów - Frosta. On i Archaon z pewnością musieli ściśle ze sobą współpracować, ponieważ słychać bezbłędne połączenie między tymi dwoma instrumentami - prawie tak, jakby jeden z nich ciągnął drugiego za ręke, a potem odwrotnie, ale w końcu szli przez chaos razem. Te dwa instrumenty wspaniale dopełniają bardzo głębokie basy wykonane przez wirtuoza - Seidemanna - który wykonał i nadal wykonuje wiele genialnej pracy jako basista w 1349. Komplemetuje i dopełnia nuty, muzyczne upiększacze, które inaczej nie zostałyby zauważone. Przechodząc teraz do wokali - głos Ravn'a jest bardzo wyjątkowy i niezapomniany. Na „MCoC” jest dokładnie tak, a także jest bardziej wyblakły, tajemniczy, nie tak z góry wprowadzony i uderzający w twarz, jak na przykład na wcześniejszych albumach, takich jak „Demonoir”. Cały aspekt muzyczny jest bardzo trudny do opisania. Słyszałam wiele zespołów i większość z nich była łatwa do przeanalizowania pod względem każdego instrumentu, tekstu lub nutu, ale składniki muzyczne 1349 są nierozłączne. Jasne, możesz opisać każdy instrument osobno, ale co ci to da? Wtedy nic nie zrozumiesz z ich pracy i przesłania. Muzycznie, 1349 to zespół, w którym wszystko jest połączone ze wszystkim innym, nawet najdrobniejsze szczegóły są w znaczący sposób związane z rzeczami , które odgrywają większą, bardziej znaczącą rolę.
Przechodząc do bardziej nastrojowej / emocjonalnej strony wydania. Słuchając winylowej wersji albumu, usłyszałam OGROMNĄ różnicę w muzyce, a także w nastroju, jakie ukazały się na płycie. Strona A była wyjątkowo zamglona, zakurzona, prawie tak, jakby była pokryta wieloma warstwami starego kurzu, jakby została nagrana w jaskini lub lochu. Uczucia, jakie przyniósł mi ten obraz, były całkiem adekwatne - czułam się też, jakbym szła przez stare zakurzone piwnice. Myślę, że ten mglisty dźwięk działał doskonale z tymi utworami, ponieważ wydawały się odległe, jak labirynt, jakbyś musiał je zrozumieć, aby dobrze je usłyszeć. Następnie mamy stronę B winylu - totalnie tracę zmysły z powodu nagłej zmiany nastroju. Jasne, wokale Ravn'a pozostają takie same (z jednym wyjątkiem, ale o tym później) - są dość zakurzone, trochę płaskie na początku `` Mengele's '', ale potem stają się bardzo głębokie, szorstkie i złe - właśnie za to je uwielbiam. Wokal i reszta instrumentów wprowadziły ten agresywny, smutny, mroczny i dość bolesny nastrój. Ta strona w mniejszym stopniu ilustruje muzyczny groove, symfonię czy spójność, ale wyraźnie pokazuje, czym kieruje się zespół - brutalnością i całkowitą agresją. Wokal Ravn'a + umiejętności gry na perkusji Frost'a uderzają cię w twarz, podczas gdy riffy Archaon'a i Seidemann'a stanowią mocne wsparcie dla tych wcześniej wspomnianych instrumentów. „Mengele's”, „Golem” i „Chained” prowadzą do doskonałego zakończenia i nowego początku - „Godslayer”. Ten konkretny utwór zawiera wszystko, co musisz wiedzieć o ich najnowszym albumie. Smutne, ponure, przepełnione bólem i rozczarowaniem wokale doskonale wyjaśniają nam wiele spraw naszego społeczeństwa. Perkusja Frosta jest bardzo agresywna, a także wyrafinowana, uzupełniona o spójne basowe i gitarowe riffy, które dopełniają cierpienia zawartego w wokalu Ravna. Zrozumienie tych tematów tabu w utworze „Godslayer” uderzyło mnie mocno, przeszyło mnie i wbiło się głęboko w moją duszę - ale wolałabym zachować wszystkie myśli dla siebie, które utwór podkreślił dla mnie. Oczywiście zinterpretowałam ten utwór bardzo osobiście, ale to oczywiście TYLKO moje rozumienie, więc każdy z was może odkryć jego znaczenie na swój sposób. Niemniej jednak Side A jest o wiele bardziej delikatne i „ukryte”, podczas gdy Side B wyrywa wnętrzności, daje siłę, agresję i pokazuje totalny ból, który jest głównie zawarty w ostatnim utworze.
Ogólnie jest to wydanie prawie doskonałe. Ma wszystko, co powinien mieć profesjonalny black metal - tajemnicę, ból, smutek i czystą agresję. Z pewnością przyniesie Ci sporo twórczo zaaranżowanej muzyki, mnóstwo głębokich i znaczących tematów do rozważenia, a także piekielnie dużo przyjemnego czasu. Jak być może zauważyłeś wcześniej, to wydawnictwo wiele dla mnie znaczy na poziomie osobistym, ale także muzycznym. To piekielna płyta, uzupełniona bardzo wysmakowaną grafiką, minimalistyczną szatą graficzną i delikatną promocją. Jeśli uwielbiasz black metal tak samo jak ja, to powinieneś posłuchać tego wydawnictwa i okazać 1349 szacunek, na jaki zasługują za utrzymanie black metalowej sceny przy życiu i wydawanie tak dobrej muzyki przez lata.
