VORKUTA - 'Where Still Darkness Dwells'

Quite recently I had the pleasure to review Vorkuta's latest EP. Yet this time I'll be reviewing the band's well-known compilation 'Where Still Darkness Dwells'. I need to point out, that I am not a huge fan of compilations - they are usually not fitting well together, they feel a little bit forced. In spite of my opinion, 'Where Still Darkness Dwells' surprised me and left me with a very positive opinion of the material, as well as the whole release including artwork, layout.
This compilation consists of ten marvelous tracks, which perfectly represent the history of Vorkuta's musical style and ideas - from early-Darkthrone-inspired music to the characteristic and personal style - very raw, crypt black metal music.
It's difficult to analyze this release like you would a full album. But as I said earlier, you can clearly notice how the band evolved and improved, how they found their own signature style which sticks with the band till' today.
Musically, the compilation isn't perfect, it has some small mistakes here and there, but these flaws aren't a downside. 'Where Still Darkness Dwells' stands strong in Vorkuta's discography and provides 51 minutes of extremely dark, mournful, and anger-filled material that truly resembles the old-school of black metal, which was widely supported in the early '90s.
Needless to say, Vorkuta is a band that should have a wider and way more supportive audience. The release's feeling-spiked music is on a really high level, and to me, it should be considered as one of the determinants of how the underground black metal should sound like.
Thanks to Vorkuta and Metal Or Die Records, as well as many other bands, we still have great pieces of music to listen to today.

Całkiem niedawno miałam przyjemność recenzować najnowszą EPkę Vorkuty. Tym razem jednak będę recenzowała słynną kompilację zespołu „Where Still Darkness Dwells”. Muszę zaznaczyć, że nie jestem wielką fanką składanek - zazwyczaj nie pasują do siebie, są trochę wymuszone. Wbrew mojej negatywnej opinii 'Where Still Darkness Dwells' zaskoczył mnie i pozostawił bardzo pozytywną opinię na temat materiału, jak i całego wydawnictwa łącznie z szatą graficzną, layoutem.
Ta kompilacja składa się z dziesięciu wspaniałych utworów, które doskonale reprezentują historię muzycznego stylu i pomysłów Vorkuty - od muzyki inspirowanej wczesnym Darkthrone po charakterystyczny i osobisty styl - bardzo surowy black metal.
Ciężko jest analizować to wydawnictwo jak cały album. Ale jak powiedziałam wcześniej, wyraźnie widać, jak zespół ewoluował i poprawiał się, jak odnaleźli swój własny, charakterystyczny styl, który pozostaje w zespole do dziś.
Muzycznie kompilacja nie jest idealna, ma tu i ówdzie kilka małych błędów, ale te wady nie są minusem. „Where Still Darkness Dwells” ma mocną pozycję w dyskografii Vorkuty i zawiera 51 minut niezwykle mrocznego, żałobnego i przepełnionego gniewem materiału, który naprawdę przypomina oldschoolowy black metal, który był szeroko wspierany we wczesnych latach 90-tych.
Nie trzeba dodawać, że Vorkuta to zespół, który powinien mieć szerszą i bardziej wspierającą publiczność. Nastrojowa muzyka na wydawnictwie jest na naprawdę wysokim poziomie i jak dla mnie, należy ją uznać za jeden z wyznaczników tego, jak powinien brzmieć podziemny black metal.
Dzięki Vorkucie i Metal Or Die Records, a także wielu innym zespołom, do dziś mamy świetne utwory do słuchania.
